It would surely be a great mistake to omit the anniversary of Johannes Brahms<\/strong> (1833 – 1897), whose song output is as fundamental as his chamber or symphonic works, in 2023. For this concert, we have therefore chosen the lesser-performed works of this great Romantic composer and supplemented them with other works by the jubilee Romantic composers Edvard Hagerup Grieg<\/strong> (1843-1907) and Max Reger<\/strong> (1873-1916). The work of the latter is virtually unknown in this country, and his songs may never have been heard in Bohemia. The programme will surprisingly conclude pieces by seldomly performed but interesting composers Frank Bridge<\/strong> (1879 \u2013 1941) and Adolph Busch<\/strong> (1839 \u2013 1913).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These romantic song gems will be performed by leading Czech mezzo-soprano Jana Hrochov\u00e1<\/strong>, young promising baritone Robin \u010cervinek,<\/strong> violist Jan \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek<\/strong> and pianist Bohum\u00edr Stehl\u00edk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert will take place in the sought-after pleasant environment of Club Salsita in Sm\u00edchov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The compositions will be performed in the original languages and accompanied by Czech subtitles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The mezzo-soprano Jana Hrochov\u00e1<\/strong> (Wallingerov\u00e1), n\u00e9e \u0160tef\u00e1\u010dkov\u00e1, gained her first singing experience in a children\u2019s choir in the Moravian town of \u0160umperk. She studied at the Prague Conservatory with Jarmila Kr\u00e1sov\u00e1 from 1993 to 1999. In 2001, she began studying privately with the soprano Natalia Romanov\u00e1. In 1998, she came in second at the Czech Conservatories Singing Contest. Her first engagements took place at the Opera Mozart in Prague between 1997 and 2000, extending her activities to ancient music (with Ars Cameralis) and folk music (with the Muzika Jara ensemble). In 2000, Mrs Hrochov\u00e1 was invited to join the opera company of the National Theatre in Brno, Czech Republic. The repertoire she sang in Brno includes Carmen (Carmen), Laura (La Gioconda), Kate (The Devil and Kate), Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Suzuki (Madame Butterfly), The Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Varvara (Katja Kabanova), Fenena (Nabucco), H\u00e4nsel (H\u00e4nsel and Gretel), Nicklausse (The Tales of Hoffmann) and others. Guest performances have taken the young mezzo to a number of opera houses, such as the Prague National Theatre, Prague State Opera, Plze\u0148, \u00dast\u00ed nad Labem, Liberec, Ostrava, Olomouc (Czech Republic), State Theatre Ko\u0161ice (Slovakia) and Theatre Freiburg (Germany). Mrs Hrochov\u00e1\u2019s concert activities are an essential part of her repertoire and have brought her together with some leading Czech and foreign orchestras, such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic, Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, Prague Radio Symphonic Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Jan\u00e1\u010dek Philharmonic Orchestra, Bohuslav Martin\u016f Philharmonic Orchestra and others. She works with conductors such as Ji\u0159\u00ed B\u011blohl\u00e1vek, Serge Baudo, Gerd Albrecht, Manfred Honeck, Ondrej Len\u00e1rd, Petr Altrichter, Jakub Hr\u016f\u0161a, Leo\u0161 Sv\u00e1rovsk\u00fd, Tom\u00e1\u0161 Hanus, Andrej Borejko, Dennis Russell Davies and others. Mrs Hrochov\u00e1  often makes guest appearances at opera houses and concert stages outside the Czech Republic (Great Britain, Japan, China, Spain, Mexico, Greece, Netherlands, Austria, Germany and Italy). In 2011, she sang the alto solo in Dvorak\u2019s Requiem mass at a state funeral of Vaclav Havel. The Brno National Theatre awarded her with the DIVA 2005, 2008 and 2010 Award. In 2012, she was nominated for the Thalia award for her role as Dulcin\u00e9e in Massenet\u2019s Don Quichotte in a production of the F. X. \u0160alda Theatre in Liberec. In 2013, she was nominated for the Thalia award for her role as Hermia in Britten\u2019s Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream in a production of The Brno National Theatre. In 2011 and 2018 she recorded songs by Bohuslav Martin\u016f for Naxos Records. In 2014, she was invited to perform the role of Carmen in the Theatre Freiburg, Germany. In 2016, she made her BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robin \u010cervinek \u2013 baritone<\/div><\/summary>

Robin \u010cervinek<\/strong> was born in Kyjov, where he also started singing at the Basic Arts School. He attended private lessons with David Szendiuch, a soloist of the National Theatre in Olomouc. In 2021, he completed his master’s degree at the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Academy of Performing Arts in Brno in Zden\u011bk \u0160muka\u0159\u2019s class. He has also been a student at the Universit\u00e4t f\u00fcr Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna since 2020, where he studies with Prof. Margit Klaushofer. During his studies, he has participated in several international performance courses with international artists and teachers such as Adam Plachetka, Kate\u0159ina Kn\u011b\u017e\u00edkov\u00e1, Thomas Steinh\u00f6fel, Singfried Goritz, Irena Sylya and Amelia Felle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has performed the following roles in the chamber opera at the Orl\u00ed Theatre in Brno: The King in Orff\u2019s opera Die Kluge<\/i>, The Poet in the contemporary opera Unknown<\/i> by Daniel \u0160imek, The Count in Il Matrimonio Segreto<\/i> by Domenico Cimarosa and The Count in Mozart\u2019s opera The Marriage of Figaro<\/i>. At the Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace Theatre in Vienna he performed the role of Harlequin in Strauss\u2019s Ariadne auf Naxos<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has also taken part in several international competitions. In 2018 he was the overall winner of the Prague Singer competition. He won 2nd prize at the Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary, where he also won numerous special prizes, such as the Jan Lucembursk\u00fd Prize, the Beno Blachut Prize, the Vil\u00e9m Z\u00edtek Prize and the Milan B\u00fcrger Prize. His other competition successes include 2nd place at the Dusek Performance Competition. In May 2019, he won 2nd prize at the Iuventus Canti competition. In 2021, he won 2nd prize at the Iuventus Canti competition and was a laureate of the Mikulas Schneider-Trnavsky International Competition. In November 2021 he was the winner of the Bohuslav Martin\u016f Foundation Competition, where he also won three special prizes. Since the 2021\/2022 season he has been a member of the opera studio of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. He also makes guest appearances at the National Theatre in Brno and the National Theatre in Ostrava.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n

Jan \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek \u2013 viola<\/div><\/summary>

Jan \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek<\/strong> first studied violin at both the Conservatory and the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Academy of Performing Arts and later extended his studies at the latter institution to include the viola. \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek worked briefly as a violinist in the Brno State Philharmonic Orchestra and as a second violinist and violist in the Moravian Quartet before returning to the Brno State Philharmonic to take up the position of violist. \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek has, however, also collaborated with other major ensembles from home and abroad, such as the Bohuslav Martin\u016f Philharmonic; the Brno Philharmonic; the Moravian Chamber Orchestra; the Talich Chamber Orchestra and the Toronto Sinfonietta; as well as with conductors of both illustrious and less illustrious names, including other fellow instrumentalists. \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek regularly performs with pianists Ji\u0159ina Kolmanov\u00e1 and Eduard Sp\u00e1\u010dil, either with them or with other colleagues, to regularly premiere selected works by Czech or foreign contemporary composers. Currently, \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek is mainly associated with the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Quartet, with whom he performs on concert stages and on international tours, but he also finds time for his own solo viola recitals in front of audiences at home and abroad. \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek continues to work with the latter group, has recorded countless albums and has travelled to several countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to his artistic activities, Jan \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek also teaches at both the Brno Conservatory and the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Academy of Performing Arts, under whose wing he served as professor of chamber music. In addition to his educational activities, \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek also teaches new young candidates for musical education at instrumental courses in Turnov or Nov\u00e9 M\u011bsto na Morav\u011b, or sits on juries of competitions at conservatories and primary art schools. For years Jan \u0158ezn\u00ed\u010dek has been associated mainly with performing with the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Quartet or with his own solo recitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bohum\u00edr Stehl\u00edk \u2013 piano<\/div><\/summary>

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Bohum\u00edr Stehl\u00edk<\/strong> is one of the foremost Czech pianists of the younger generation. He has distinguished himself both as a soloist and chamber music player, having developed a sensitive instrumental skill and great musical expressive power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bohum\u00edr\u2019s music education started at an early age at the Music Gymnasium in Prague under Irina Kondrat\u011bnko and later on at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Franti\u0161ek Mal\u00fd. From 2011 to 2016 he studied under well-know Swedish pianist Mats Widlund at Edsberg Music Institute, part of the Royal Academy in Stockholm and one of the most prestigious music academies of Northern Europe. He has been awarded various prizes in many international solo competitions (e.g. Ljunggrenska t\u00e4vlingen \u2013 1st prize, Stockholm International Music Competition \u2013 2nd price, Virtuosi per Musica di Pianoforte \u2013 1st prize, Concertino Praga \u2013 1st prize etc.). Bohumir also obtained the Yamaha Scholarship Award and the prestigious KMA Swedish National Scholarship for both solo piano, chamber music and accompaniment (maximal sum reached in 2015). A member of Duo du R\u00eave, Bohum\u00edr and flautist Jana Jarkovsk\u00e1 won prizes in various competitions of music ensembles (Chieri International Music Competition \u201cCitta di Chieri\u201d \u2013 1st prize, Val Tidone International Chamber Music Competition \u2013 1st prize, Salieri-Zinneti Chamber Music Competition \u2013 3rd prize, winner of ProMusicis International Award in France, winner of ISA Challenge and Open Awards in Austria etc.). He also recorded several CDs with Jana Jarkovska. Outside Duo du R\u00eave, he collaborates with violinist Mark\u00e9ta Janou\u0161kov\u00e1 and is also a member of D\u2019Accord chamber music ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to his concert activities, he collaborates with Czech Radio. Bohum\u00edr also works in productions for the Povale\u010d Music Festival (CZ) and the \u201eD\u2019Accord, Das Klassikfestival\u201c in (D), where he also leads the masterclass. He worked as a teacher at the Ingesund Academy of Music at Karlstad University in Sweden and since October 2016 has also been teaching at the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. Bohum\u00edr works as a regenschori in the Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary in K\u0159tiny (CZ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
